A barge can be a "rake," which holds approximately 1,700 tons, or a "box" which holds approximately 1,900 tons. M/G's barges are 195 feet long and 35 feet wide, with 13-foot hulls, meaning the distance from the bottom of the barge to the gunnel is 13 feet.
Imagine a towboat 44 feet wide, and 138 feet long , with 6,000 horsepower, going up the Mississippi River with 30 barges in tow. The barges would probably be 5 wide and 6 long, which means the person in the wheelhouse has 1,170 feet out in front of him to maneuver. The barges are moved at an average of 5 miles per hour and require thorough planning to make it to their destinations on time.
M/G has two types of dry cargo barges: Covered Barges and Open Hopper, which have no cover. The covers are on rollers and can roll back and forth. Some barges have lift-tops, which require a crane to remove. These are dry cargo barges, which move grain, coal, sugar, fishmeal, scrap iron, steel coils, petroleum coke, barite and ores.
